DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Vivarium (the laboratory animal housing unit) provides support to researchers by housing and caring for laboratory animals. The Vivarium team currently includes a staff of five (5) and student employees.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Animal Resource Manager, the Assistant Vivarium Manager will support the daily operations of vivarium, ensuring the animal husbandry, sanitation, caging and maintenance is in compliance with regulations and guidelines set by the department, the campus and governmental agencies. Ensures duties of staff are performed in compliance with established protocols. In consultation with the Campus Veterinarian, designs, develops, and administers training on a variety of animal health, safety and welfare topics and manages training records. Supervises vivarium staff and student employees. Provides guidance to unit technicians. Manages recharge data entry, purchasing, and import/export documentation.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $74,000 - $80,300/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay, and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

30% - Supervision

• Provides supervision to animal technicians; addresses personnel matters including hiring, selection, scheduling, performance evaluations, employee development and recognition.

• In collaboration with the Vivarium Manager, supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

• Supervises vivarium student employees, coordinating schedules and addresses concerns.

30% - Oversight

• In collaboration with the Vivarium Manager, supervises daily unit operations ensuring that research animals receive proper husbandry and care, and that the unit is in compliance with regulations and guidelines set by the department, the university and governmental agencies.

• Manages the quarterly sentinel testing program under the direction of campus Veterinarian and Vivarium Manager.

• Communicates with facility Principal Investigators (PIs) and their groups about requirements, best practices, deficiencies and expectations.

• Reviews Vivarium operations and records, provides input on the development and/or upkeep of standard operating procedures and manages ongoing document review and updates.

• Provides problem-solving support for unit workflow issues.

20% - Health & Safety Compliance

• Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations by developing training needs. Delivers training and/ or delegates training needs for the Principal Investigators (PIs) and all other users of the Vivarium.

• Works with the campus Veterinarian to identify other training needs and most appropriate methods for meeting needs to ensure compliance and safety.

• Leads the management and structure of a new training program for vivarium staff, researchers, and students working with animals in the vivarium.

• Provide group training and one-on-one for specific topics related to animal health, safe animal handling, disinfection practices, and more.

• Generate and implement ideas for making the training program more robust, efficient, and forward-thinking.

• Maintains training records and ensures that necessary training is up to date.

10% - Administration

• Places work orders. Orders chemicals / detergents for cage wash operations.

• Makes recommendations for equipment purchases; performs equipment and supply inventory.

• Coordinates routine maintenance procedures; assesses condition of caging and equipment and makes recommendations for replacement / repair.

• Monitors, inspects, troubleshoots and requests maintenance on cage washing equipment / sterilizers, and equipment relative to the provision of drinking water to the animals.

• Coordinates the import/export.

• Responsible for the recharge entry and billing.

10% - Animal Care

• Performs animal care technical duties such as routine animal care tasks, maintaining animal records, technical and experimental assistance, feeds animals, cleans animal rooms, provides enrichment, and transports animals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.

• Working knowledge of animal care and safety and regulatory environments.

• Working knowledge of vivarium equipment and facility management.

• Skills in animal husbandry, record-keeping and inventory control.

• Strong verbal communication skills with ability to effectively communicate with various vivarium constituents including researchers, students, staff, vendors and leadership

• Strong written communication skills.

• Basic analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to lead and mentor staff employees.

• Computer competency and ability to learn university software systems including Mosaic, purchasing software, and recharge systems.

• Basic ability to identify behavioral or health issues with animal(s) under care and report to vet or supervisor any changes or unusual behavior or physical issues that need attention.

• Experience developing training materials and providing trainings in various modes.

• Experience developing standard operating procedures and maintaining required records.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience supervising.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

• Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.

• The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.

• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.

• Ability to work on-call.

• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
