CUSTOMER SERVICE FIELD TECHNICIAN I/II

Description:

Soquel Creek Water District is seeking a Customer Service Field Technician I/II (depending on experience) in our Water Resources department. This is a full-time, benefitted position.

Position DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs meter reading, monitoring, meter maintenance, repair, and replacement; completes service orders, turns water services on and off; assesses and resolves customer concerns and problems; reports damage, leaks, or unusual meter conditions; performs related work as assigned.

  • Monitors and takes scheduled customer meter reads utilizing manual and automated technologies & methods.
  • Reviews and monitors customer consumption data for usage trends. 
  • Evaluates variety of customer issues/complaints; trouble-shoots, responds and takes corrective action.
  • Investigates, contacts customers, reports and responds to illegal connections, main leaks, hazards, uncooperative customers, water waste, other related violations , etc.
  • Performs service-related notifications; may turn water service on or off according to District policies.
  • Provides information to customers regarding billing policies, and procedures, water quality and pressure, District complaint resolution procedures, metering technology, and related issues, etc. 
  • Logs data, prepares reports, completes work orders.
  • Operates field tools and equipment, including computers and other business tools and technologies.
  • Operates and maintains District vehicle in a clean, orderly, well-stocked and safe manner. 
  • Checks for inoperative, defaced, or bypassed meters or for leaks; checks water meters for accuracy; assists customers or other District staff in locating meters or service lines.
  • Performs maintenance, repair of meters and meter box; installs and grouts meter boxes; cleans area around meter boxes, including cutting back vegetation and removing debris, dirt, and water from boxes.
  • Performs scheduled on-call shifts and responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Principles and practices of effective customer service.
  • Basic principles of piping system hydraulics, plumbing and maintenance.
  • Use and maintenance of basic hand tools, such as shovel, speed wrench, and saws-all. 
  • Basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Read meters and metering data, and troubleshoot issues through observation, data analysis and other methods. 
  • Read and interpret street and parcel maps and learn service area.
  • Work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Interact tactfully and courteously with various individuals, where relations are sometimes strained.
  • Represent the District in a professional manner; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. 
  • Perform basic office duties.
  • Observe safety practices and work in a safe manner; operate District vehicles in a safe manner and in accordance with traffic laws and District policies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Technician I - High school grad or equivalent and one year of construction maintenance or related work; basic knowledge of piping system hydraulics, plumbing, basic mechanical skills; customer service contact with the public. 

Technician II – The above, plus 2-years` experience as Customer Service Field Tech I or equivalent experience. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Cal. Drivers` License
  • Clean driving record (no multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years) and proof of valid insurance coverage
  • Cal. Division of Drinking Water Grade D-2 Distribution Operators Certificate: Must obtain within specified time periods (Level I)  or possess–with experience (Level II).
  • Must regularly work scheduled “On-Call” overtime, emergency and off-hours shifts as required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Compensation: Tech I - $28.70 – $40.60 per hr./Tech II - $30.13 – $42.63 per hr. Full-Time+On-Call hrs.

Health Insurance: Medical – We pay 90% premiums (base plan). Dental/Vision – We pay 100% premiums. 

Life Insurance: Term Life – We pay 100% premiums: 2xSalary/$200k maximum. Voluntary additional coverage. 

Retirement: CalPERS membership: Classic 2.5%@55 or PEPRA 2%@62 (District does not contribute to Social Security).

Deferred Compensation: 457 voluntary deferred compensation plan.

Vacation: 12 to 25 paid days depending on length of service. 

Holidays: 12 paid holidays plus 2 floating holidays. 

Sick Leave: 12 paid days.
