Starting Salary Range: $63,629 to $97,670 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $4,018 is granted to eligible faculty.

About the Position: 

Cabrillo College seeks a full-time, 185-Day, categorically funded, tenure-track Learning Disability Specialist (LDS)/Counselor faculty member in the Accessibility Support Center (ASC), which is part of the Academic, Career Counseling & Educational Support Services (ACCESS) Division of Cabrillo College. This position will administer and interpret diagnostic tests and certify new students with learning disabilities; design and implement individual and group supportive instruction and study skills classes for students identified with learning disabilities; and provide academic accommodations based on diagnostic assessment. Additionally, the LDS/Counselor will provide comprehensive academic, vocational, and disability counseling services; provide student planning and support workshops, provide career and transfer advisement; teach Counseling and Guidance (CG) classes adapted for ASC eligible students. This position is part of a team of professionals providing coordinated and comprehensive academic support designed to meet legal mandates and success for students with disabilities in a diverse learning environment.

The position is scheduled to begin in March 7, 2022 pending Governing Board ratification. Working conditions may be in a traditional "in person" setting, online, or hybrid format scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations including days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the College: Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Examples of Duties

• Provide counseling services, which may include evening or off-campus assignments

Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways

Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress

Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours

Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

To be qualified for the LDS/Counselor position, applicants must meet the state minimum qualifications required in the following disciplines: Counselor of Students with Disabilities AND Learning Disabilities Specialist as listed below.

Counselor of Student with Disabilities:

• Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling OR

• Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, *marriage and family therapy or *marriage, family and child counseling AND fifteen (15) or more semester units in upper division or graduate-level coursework specifically related to people with disabilities, OR

• Completion of six (6) semester units, or the equivalent of graduate-level counseling practicum or field-work in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities OR

• Two (2) years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

      • Counseling students with disabilities OR

      • Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare agencies in which the responsibilities were predominantly for adults with disabilities

• The Equivalent (see information below)

• A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students Programs and Service (DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in college for students with disabilities

* NOTE: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above-listed degrees AND a current Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license is an alternative to this discipline

Learning Disabilities Specialist:

Master's degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling AND fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in learning disabilities to include adult cognitive and achievement assessment OR

• The Equivalent OR

• A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students Programs and Service(DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in college for students with disabilities

Required Professional Expertise:

Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field, curriculum development, review and assessment of student learning outcomes

• Knowledge and understanding of programs such as Guided Pathways, that address commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching strategies enhancing student success 

• Work cooperatively and demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students, administrators, faculty, and staff

• Effective oral and written communication skills and effective use of technology

• Evidence of professional activities and service beyond primary teaching assignments

• Certificate with the Chancellor's Office on the California Community College Model of Assessment of Learning Disabilities.

• If not already certified, certification eligibility to enroll in this training by September 1,2018, with certification by the Chancellor's Office required by July 31, 2019

• Ability to administer and interpret achievement and cognitive tests, including the WAIS-IV,WJ-IV Cognitive and Achievement, WIAT-III

• Familiarity with record-keeping software and technology, including the Computer Assisted Recordkeeping and Scoring system (CARS) used by LD specialists; databases used by counselors and SARS for scheduling

• Ability to provide educational and career counseling and create Student Education Plans(SEPs)

• Experience with or familiarity with a diverse population of students including those with ADHD, LD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), mental health challenges, among a wide range of visible and invisible disabilities

• Ability to develop and participate in program/service planning, evaluation, and improvement

• Awareness of assistive technology and alternate media services for students with disabilities

• Ability to provide professional outreach to faculty, campus department staff, high schools, community agencies and industry partners to support the success of students with disabilities

• Maintain clear, timely and accurate contact and student progress records

• Ability to develop curriculum and revisions including Student Services Learning Outcomes(SSLOs)

• Participate in professional development activities such as department and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and the governance structure of the college in order to contribute and maintain currency regarding issues related to students with a disability

• Ability to travel to area high schools, various college sites, and community agencies during the course of employment

• Perform other duties as required or assigned

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

• One (1) year of community college experience within the last three (3) years with a diverse student population

• Working knowledge of Title V and other governmental regulations as they apply to students with disabilities

• Experience conducting learning disability evaluations with adults in community college following the California Community Colleges Learning Disability Eligibility Model (LDEM)

• Experience providing academic, career and personal advising at the community college level

• Experience developing curriculum and teaching counseling or learning skills classes at the community college level

• Knowledge of universal design and innovative teaching methodologies

• Ability to utilize a variety of technology tools and online resources to effectively support students

• Knowledge of college equity issues and experience advocating and developing strategies to promote equity across a broad spectrum of diversity

• Bilingual in Spanish/English
