Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Royalties Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of royalty administration — tracking contract terms with licensors, monitoring milestones, collaborating across departments to keep product and sales data accurate, and ensuring timely and precise royalty calculations for studios and artists. The ideal candidate will have robust accounting experience with a strong eye for detail, advanced proficiency with spreadsheets and database software, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving.

This position works primarily onsite at our corporate headquarters in Santa Cruz, CA, but remote candidates whose skills and experience strongly align with the position may be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for administration of the Royalty process and all associated tasks
  • Track and record key terms contained in contracts with licensors (studios and artists) such as minimum guarantees, advances, and royalty rates
  • Collaborate with Licensing Coordinator to monitor contract lifecycle and communicate upcoming milestones and opportunities to internal stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Art, Sales and Logistics teams to update the list of products, at a SKU level, that were sold or will be sold during the quarter. Add and remove SKUs as needed in all systems of record and worksheets used to calculate quarterly royalties due
  • Review monthly royalty reporting from all financial systems of record for accuracy and calculate royalties earned by Studios and Artists
  • Calculate quarterly royalties earned by studios and artists and provide statements to the studios and artists, detailing products sold and royalty amounts to be paid
  • Prepare journal entries to record quarterly royalty expenses, prepaid royalty amounts and minimum guarantees due
  • Assist the Sales team in preparing forecasts for studios, as required
  • Evaluate the royalty payment process with the objective to simplify the process
  • Evaluate existing accounting practices and make recommendations to improve processes and internal controls
  • Participate in the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures
  • Assist in monthly financial close activities, including preparation of general ledger account reconciliations, and other accounting related tasks as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor`s degree in accounting, Business or a related field preferred
  • 5+ years progressive accounting experience 
  • QuickBooks experience (will consider experience with other accounting software) 
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent analytical reporting and communication skills
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize tasks and work towards deadlines with minimal oversight 
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information in a format that is easy to understand 
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills 
  • Experience using database management software preferred
  • Ability to bend and/or reach or sit for up to 3 hours at a time
  • Ability to occasionally lift/and or move up to 20lbs
  • Must have adequate vision (with corrective lenses if needed) to clearly view computer screen

COMPENSATION:

$85,000 to $100,000 annually

The compensation listed here is provided in good faith as a general description of the salary range for the position posted. The compensation offered to the successful candidate depends on location, skills, experience, education, and other objective job-related factors.
