Position Overview:

The Hardgoods Design Engineer conducts various tasks and manages projects related to the design and manufacturing of skateboard componentry. This includes but is not limited to concept review & analysis, 3D part design, prototyping, design for manufacturing, process and material validation, value analysis, product quality specifications, failure mode and effect analysis, and operational and performance qualification.

This position collaborates with other R&D and Hardgoods staff, Marketing, Creative, Manufacturing, and Purchasing to design and ensure highly functioning, quality products over their lifespan.

Job Responsibilities: (include but are not limited to)

  • Receive and evaluate new and updated product engineering requests
  • Conduct concept reviews including identifying design parameters, general manufacturability, material needs and analysis, and initial DFM
  • Confirm design goals including visual, operational and performance needs
  • Design and prototype products & specify componentry
  • Coordinate design and performance reviews through development process
  • Creation and management of EBOMs
  • Collaborate with factory to verify design, materials, and processes
  • Evaluate and create process control plans when needed
  • Process verification & validations
  • Coordinate Pre-production plans with purchasing
  • Establish product quality specifications
  • Coordinate failure mode and effect analysis
  • Coordinate operational and performance qualification
  • Identify and improve process variation
  • Monitor and control production per quality and performance specifications

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Design Engineering, Engineering, or related field

5+ years of relative design engineering experience required

3+ years of experience in process control, design for manufacturing required

Material knowledge including adhesives, plastics, urethanes, and metal alloys

Experience with injection molding, casting urethane, die and gravity casting aluminum alloys preferred

Experience in wood species and lamination of woods a plus

Knowledge of skateboarding and skateboard equipment preferred

Job & Skill Requirements:

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with an emphasis on cross-departmental communication and teamwork

Ability to manage projects start to finish with an overall view of company strategy

In-depth knowledge of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, 3D Printing

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, proficiency in or ability to learn various other software and user interfaces including Outlook, Asana, 3D printing software, etc.
